Montalcino has changed enormously over the past half century from the once tranquil and peaceful town it was, until becoming the actual city large in size and extension. Especially has changed the attention given to wine, at one time not so important and now a source of inestimable prestige. And one of the first areas to be planted was the Canalicchio, to the right of the road which connects Montalcino to Buonconvento and situated where the land rise, the exposure to sunlight begins to improve, and the dampness of lower-lying areas ceases to become a factor.
Canalicchio is a subzone of the north side become famous for the pluriannual wine-making tradition and a prominent role must be attributed to the Pacenti family. It was during the 60's that the forefather Rosildo, convinced of the potential of Sangiovese, founded with courage and intuition the first business nucleous. Then came the son, Franco Pacenti, who in more than three decades of hard but valiant work has managed to transform what was a polyvalent agricultural business, into a specialized wine-making business, attracting a faithful following even in the international markets. The Pacenti family has arrived today to the third generation composed of Lisa, Serena and Lorenzo, Franco's offspring, who complement him in the administration each one following a specific line of work.
Thanks to the efforts of the whole family, the firm has sensibly increased, so much as to render necessary the creation of a new and modern cellar, perfectly integrated in the Val D'Orcia land scape. Theirs is a decidedly traditional interpretation, the Sangiovese, cultivated with meticulous cure and attention, is the only vine present. The grapes transform themselves into wine without tricks or expedients, and the wines ripen in classical and imposing barrels of slavonian and french oak in the heart of the cellar. And all – Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino Riserva – exhibit the fragrance, the expressivity, the decided but refined tannins and the elegance of the celebrated Sangiovese signed Franco Pacenti – Canalicchio.
